The Original Plane Pull ®!
Don't get fooled. This is the original plane pull®.
The first-ever Plane Pull ® in the World was held for Special Olympics Virginia at Dulles International Airport back in 1992. It was the brainchild of Deputy Chief of Police of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, Joe Hurtuk, known among his colleagues as the "Father of the Plane Pull." Five teams participated in the event, raising approximately $10,000 for children and adult athletes with intellectual disabilities in Virginia.
Since 1992, the Plane Pull ® has skyrocketed into a major fund raising venture for Special Olympics programs throughout the country. In Virginia, Plane Pulls held in both Northern Virginia and Norfolk have raised over $700,000 in the past six years for athletes with intellectual disabilities throughout the state. There are similar Plane Pulls held throughout the year in Hawaii, Texas, Tennessee and Maryland that benefit Special Olympics programs in those states. The event is so popular, in fact, that Special Olympics has the registered trademark on all Plane Pulls ® that take place.
This year we hope to have more than 60 teams - many of which come back year after year to defend their titles - playing tug-of-war with a Boeing jet and benefiting the thousands of Special Olympics Virginia athletes.
